This is where the value-over-price trap bites hardest.

Tight is not spec. The spec for that mounting kit was 135 ft-lbs. He'd hit 118. It doesn't look different. It is different. We found the loose bolt at a follow-up inspection — 10,000 miles later. Luck isn't a torque strategy.

For every installation, we keep:

  • Hitch model and serial number
  • Rail kit and bracket part numbers
  • A signed torque verification sheet (Step 5)
  • Date, odometer reading, and photos

Don't buy “universal” anything. A properly engineered rail kit has specific frame measurements and specific bracket kits. If a listing says “universal fit,” proceed with extreme caution. There is no universal truck frame.

“It worked on my buddy's truck” is not a spec. It doesn't matter if the buddy had the same model year. Different cab configurations, different bed lengths, different frame revisions — all of these change the mounting kit. Measure first, order second.

The price view. If you're comparing hitches on unit price alone, you're comparing the wrong number. Include installation labor, expected service life, replacement risk, and downtime in the calculation. In my experience with 8 years of orders, the cheapest option has cost us more in 60% of cases.
